Let's Get Some Video
Perfectly captured and edited video is not necessary. We just need footage to work with. Please don't let this be a roadblock to your success.
How to capture your video
Keep it simple
The process does not need to be overly complicated. I've worked with all kinds of video and qualities of film over the years, I make it work. We just need footage to start with.
What you need
- Your phone
- Or a waterproof camera like a GoPro
Attaching either your phone or the GoPro to a selfie stick or handle can make capturing footage easier.
How to do it
It's a lot quicker if you ask a family member, friend, or, best of all, a lifeguard at your pool to help you film.
If you don't have anyone that can help, prop up the camera on the side and swim towards, away, and across it.
Angles
The ideal collection
I can give you feedback off just about any video you shoot of yourself swimming, but if you really want to get your money's worth, you'll want to collect 2-3 minutes of your swimming from a couple of different angles.
What's laid out below is the ideal collection of angles. These allow me to really analyze your stroke fully. If you can't get all of these, don't worry, I can still help.
Above & toward
One length of you swimming towards the camera, with the camera above the water.
Above & away
One length of you swimming away from the camera, with the camera above the water.
Under & towards
One length of you swimming towards the camera, with the camera underwater, either on the bottom or just below the surface.
Under & side on
One or two lengths of film underwater side on.
Above & side on
One or two lengths of film walking alongside you as you swim with the camera above the water. Ask a friend to help you with this one and have them hold the camera and walk along the pool as you swim.
The last two views are where a lifeguard or a friend is most helpful. Ideal is walking alongside as you swim a length. If you are solo and the camera is just on the bottom or submerged underwater, and just on the side of the pool above the surface, and you swim by it a couple of times, it'll work.
