You Can Be Whatever You Want To Be

There is inside of you
All the potential
To be whatever
You want to be –
All of the energy
To do anything
You want to do.
Imagine yourself as you
Would like to be,
Doing what you want to do,
And each day, take one step
Towards your dream
And though at times
It may seem
Too difficult to continue,
Hold onto your dream.
One morning you will
Awake to find
That you are the person
You dreamed of –
Doing what you wanted to do –
Simply because
You had the courage
To believe
In your potential
And hold
Onto your dream

– D. Levine

I’ve had this poem stuck up in my room, next to my bed for quite a few years now. It was given to me at a swim camp that I attended in Swaziland in 2004, I liked it and for some reason it has stuck with me for the last 6 years, Malawi, South Africa, Namibia and now Spokane, Washington.

When I woke up this morning and read this poem for the millionth time, it felt a little different. It was a feeling of realization I think, a realization that I am doing the things I want to do. That I am loving doing the things I want to do! Now, I know that this motivational, “you can do anything you want” positive self talk sends many people into major B.S. alert mode… Fair enough, I will give you the fact that this has the potential to be cheeeezzzzyyy and “well, you can’t do ANYTHING that you want to do”. BUT with a little common sense, a distant dream or goal and a rather large amount of determination and faith, you can be the person you want to be, doing the things you want to do. I don’t think that is cheeeezzzzyyy, I think that is exciting.

In no way or form do I feel like I have reached or achieved my goals or dreams. I still have a long long way to go before I get close, but I had to smile this morning when I realized that I am on the right track and I that I am enjoying it as much as I thought I would. So, what’s your goal, what’s your dream? How many steps did you take towards it today?
