1. The “A” Race This is your target race for the season. The most important of all races for you. The one you want to perform at your best, PR and have everything come together! Everything in your season works back from this race.2. The TesterThis usually raced 10-14 weeks out from your “A” race. It gives you a chance to simulate your up coming A race – a dress rehearsal of sorts, one you expect to race well in.3. The Race Tune UpThis is usually raced 4-5 weeks before you A race. Usually shorter, less demanding than your “A” race. It gives you a chance to check your progress and expose your body to some more racing. 4. The Cobweb Cleaner Your first race of the season. It kicks things off and gets you into the swing of things. Those 4 races should provide the skeleton to a successful season. The best triathletes (in fact the best athletes in most individual sports) will follow a similar sort of plan through their season.
Does this mean you can only race this many races in a season?
No! It all depends on your goals and what you ultimately want to achieve. You may choose to race less four races in a season, you may choose to race more.
If you do plan to race more races, make sure there is a purpose behind your race. I’ll often encourage triathletes to just do the swim portion of a race, or the swim and part of the bike course. We’ll do this in an effort to test a strategy or get familiar with the uncomfortable experience of the open water race experience.Plan Your SeasonTwo resources to help you along as you plan your season
